Can anyone give me a positive identification of this sapling? Is it a Pawpaw Tree? |
What interested me was the bark and leaves of this tree. I had heard several years ago that extracts from the Pawpaw Tree can be used as a natural pesticide for everything except the Zebra Swallowtail butterfly. Even the deer avoid eating this tree! While reading all of the information, my brain wheels were just a-turning! This could possibly be the answer to the massive bug problem in my garden! All I need is a way to extract the juices from the leaves and twigs..perhaps boiling? Anyway, it is so worth a try if this can eradicate even a few of the many, many insects that have taken a liking to my plants!
The immature fruit on the sapling. This was a single fruit, most are in clusters of five or more! |
After reading a ton of information, I went out back to count my possible Pawpaw Tree saplings! In one area near the mulch pile, there were a good fifteen or twenty young trees just about two feet tall. I scanned the area and never found a large tree. Could these trees have been transported here as seeds mixed in with the mulch? The "Mulchman" told me that there was no telling just what was mixed in the truckloads he brings as he just hauls the stuff. It does seem a mite strange that a whole grove of trees the same size would suddenly spring up without any adult trees in the area. Well, it matters not..I am just happy that the little trees decided to call the woods behind the house their home! Perhaps with this mess of trees, I will benefit it two ways..free, natural insecticide and fruit! Only time will tell..only time will tell!
I found your post as I was trying to identify a sapling that popped up under our front porch on google images, I hope your investigation was correct because I'd be thrilled to have a Paw Paw in the yard, when I transplanted it the root system was larger than I expected and with the location I did more damage then desirable while digging it up, hopefully a little extra care will help it flourish, thanks for the info!
ReplyDeleteYou are most welcome! I had an older gentleman come confirm the identification so hopefully, he knows his plants! Keep me posted on how your little tree does. The ones in the mulch pile are growing well and I hope to have fruit soon! Good luck and thanks for stopping in for a chat!
