Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer, do,
I'm half crazy all for the love of you.
It won't be a stylish marriage,
I can't afford a carriage,
But you'll look sweet,
Upon the seat,
Of a bicycle built for two!
This chorus to the song "Daisy Bell" was written in 1892. My kids never knew the full song but would go around singing this part over and over again. Their grandma had taught them this and it soon became a favorite. I still hum the little ditty occasionally and today, thought about those first words while I was in the garden. I have not been able to get out as much as I like and this has taken a toll on the gardens. Weeds have taken over and every plant needs "dead-heading" but the daisies were of particular concern.
"Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer, do!" When I first ventured toward the daisy garden, I was a bit alarmed. The daisies are green! What? Daisies are not green! White..yes! Yellow..yes! Green..NO!!! All of the daisies appeared to have green petals. Something was wrong with this deal! I inspected. Sure enough, all of the tops of the plants had the typical cone-shaped center but the "petals" were green. Only these were not petals..these were tiny plants! The seeds in the spent flower heads were sprouting! I had not gotten out quick enough to pick the seed heads and now with the rains of yesterday and today, these seeds were sprouting right where they were..still atop of the plant stalk! Oh, my! This cannot be good! I picked off a number of them and poked them under a handful of dirt. Hopefully, the tiny plants will survive to become healthy daisy plants and fill the garden with their golden beauty!
Daisies are one of those "feel-good" finds in the garden. No matter how dreary a day might be, the sight of a bright yellow daisy will cheer you. When you have a large mass of daisies all bobbing their heads in the Bay breeze, the sight is quite breathtaking! "Daisy, Daisy, I'm half crazy all for the love of you!" Yes...I love my daisies..when they are yellow! Not green!!!!
