My daughter and son-in-law's new place has lots of land for gardens and fruit orchards. She wants almost every type of fruit bearing tree to be planted, he mainly wants apples! We are already planning the gardens and will work on the orchards this winter. One of the things she wished to do was plant olive trees. This is a new one for me. I have never planted olives before and was not even sure that they would do well here. She seems to be confident that there will be no problems so an olive orchard will be forthcoming.
Today, Mark and I went to the local building supply place to choose a new dining room light. Our old chandelier was starting to flicker so we figured it was about time for a new one. While there, I spied something that we just had to buy....olive trees! Yep, who would have guessed that you could actually buy an olive tree in a building supply place? Not me! Anyway, we picked the best looking two of the three that were there. The last one was pathetically dried and about dead so instead of spending $20 on a a stick, we bought the others. These are to be the start of an olive orchard!
Since we have a lot of work to do before the ground is ready for the tiny trees, the two olive trees will be planted in pots. I am not sure if deer will munch these to the ground or not so they will stay inside for a few months. While they are growing, we can take cuttings and start more trees. Perhaps by the time the orchard's ground is ready for planting, we will have a good number of trees for her! Yes! Two little twigs can become something quite large....I hope!
