My sweet daughter-in-law sent squash seeds to me a few weeks ago. Knowing that the pesky squash bugs just ruined every plant in the garden, I decided it would be best to wait a bit before planting these seeds. There was no use in just providing another meal for the bugs. Then came incessant rains, excessive heat and a couple of injuries (my foot and Son's knee). Things were delayed longer than I preferred but the seeds were planted in spite of it being a bit late in the year. I figured that it was better late than never so the seeds went into the soil.
Days went by with no sign of the seeds sprouting. Just a few mornings ago, I spied a dratted squirrel digging in the very area where I put the seeds. Geez! I cannot catch a break from the garden pests this year! I shooed the squirrel from the squash rows only to have him snatch a ripe tomato just before he clambered over the gate. Well, at least, he was not eating the seeds!
This morning, a happy surprise greeted me! Tiny squash plants were peeping above the soil! I was elated but still have this sense of angst. Will there be time for the squash to produce before winter? Will the looming threat of storms wash the plants down the hillside? Will the bugs return? I sure hope all of these worries are for naught and the squash do well. It would make me happy to report to Joanna that her seeds were a success! Wish me luck as I am pushing it here by planting these so late in the season! I should be thinking about planting winter crops not squash!
