Winter...the time to garden!

Early this fall, I put a lot of cabbage plants in the garden.  They are doing well and are making heads.  It won't be long before we can dine upon lovely, fresh cabbage.  In the meantime, however, we have been enjoying the mustard greens several times a week.  Those things grow so fast!  I, also, planted broccoli and cauliflower.  Broccoli has been in the garden in the past and has done remarkably well but I have never attempted cauliflower.  Well, I was surprised today to find that the cauliflower is heading right along side of the broccoli!  The fall/winter garden is doing amazingly well!

That said, it was time to add to the garden goodies.  Spinach and beets were planted today!  I have a few more seeds to put in as soon as I can get rows made.  Once the seeds sprout and the plants are about four inches tall, more of the (hurricane debris) mulch will be hauled up the hill and scattered under the plants.  Folks, never burn nor discard that debris!  Grind it!  Oh, my goodness!  That stuff makes incredible mulch and is improving the soil as it rots.  I will never again look at the debris line the same.

I did want to make mention that the home supply stores down here have no inkling of fall/winter gardens.  Seeds are sold "seasonally" which means nothing after August.  If you wish to plant after that time, you had better stockpile a few seeds, fertilizer and any other gardening supplies.  The employees looked at me like I was nuts when I questioned their lack of seeds.  Moral...buy early and don't depend on anyone there to have gardening knowledge.  Happy (winter) gardening, folks!  It's gonna be good!
