The "General" and I have been friends for some years now. He often comes to see me at sunrise and we share a moment of peace before the day starts. Both of us are thankful to see yet another day. The General is a red-winged blackbird that has been around the Bayou for years. Over that time, he and I have become quite friendly with each other to the point that I truly miss him if he does not appear. Each morning before dawn, he flies to a branch within an arm's reach and calls as if to say "hello". Of course, I talk back to the bird as if he can fully understand every word. He lingers just long enough for the sun to rise and for me to get started with the chores.
The General is the dominant male blackbird here. When he comes to eat the birdseed, all others wait in nearby branches until he and his ladylove get their fill. Once they leave, the others squabble over who is next. Oftentimes, the General will return to set things straight with his underlings before heading back to the marsh.
It is funny, in a way, how critters seem to fully understand that there can be friendships that span the difference. They have no qualms once they are assured that you mean no harm. It is too bad that people cannot be that accommodating. Yep, I think I will keep my critter friends and forego the drama connected to people. Life is easier and much more peaceful that way.
