A few years back, we "inherited" yet another "throwaway" pet. You know the type. The critters that crude people discard like trash. For some reason, our place must seem like an ideal place for animals to live out their lives in peace. My son-in-law brought us a tiny, black kitten that had been thrown out at his place of business. He owns a ballroom dance studio that is a busy place so the kitten did not stay unnoticed long. He scooped it up and carried it here knowing the little thing would be welcome. Bat, the cat, has endeared himself to each and every one of us! He seems so appreciative that he now has a loving home. Personally, I knew all along that the cat was "special". He just had ways about him that set him apart from all other cats.
Now I have come to realize just how "special" Bat is! A few days ago, he was enamored by a single okra pod that had inadvertently dropped to the floor. Since this kept him occupied for over an hour, I was elated to let him have his fun. I even went so far as to take a couple of photographs of his interest in the pod. While most of the pictures turned out well, once the cat tired of posing for the camera, things got eerie. He became quite the "Cheshire Cat"...as in the "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll. He started disappearing! Literally...disappearing! In several photographs, the floor shows through the cat! Yes, I know this is some fluke of photography which, most likely, involves my skills (or lack thereof) but the photograph is rather intriguing. Bat..the disappearing cat! I think he should audition for the next movie if ever one is made! He has this part down pat!
Now...have you ever thought about that whole "Cheshire Cat" thing? It seems that way, way back in the day in Cheshire, England, cheese was formed into the shape of a cat. Cheshire cheese shops sold this with instructions to "eat the cheese from the back to front". This left the sort of funky, weird grinning face as the last part before the cheese (or cat) disappeared. Lewis Carroll obviously knew of the folklore and used this to name his Cheshire Cat! Things like this (and disappearing cats, in general) interest me....most likely only me...but now you know!
