The Paintbrushes are Tired

Every time I get one of these hare-brained ideas, I usually need Son to come to my rescue.  He obliges, even though, he sometimes scratches his head in wonderment.  I admit to having some pretty weird ideas about things but, sometimes, they just work!  The latest worked out quite nicely...with his help.  A few weeks ago, it dawned on me that if I was to ever get the house in shape, I was just going to have to take that first step.  So, I did.  The first step was to redo the laundry room since Son had to replace the floor.  It seems that termites love wood floors so "out with the old and in with the new".  I took the opportunity to pull everything from the room, paint all of the trim and walls, ditched a broken freezer and then put back only what I deemed necessary.  Well, the laundry room looked great....but....it opens into the kitchen.   I mean, literally opens into the kitchen.  There is no door to close so you see one from the other.  While the laundry room looked fresh and new, the kitchen simply looked blah.  Something had to be done. So, I started on the kitchen.

Everything was stripped out, cleaned and painted.  Nice! Except for that horrible floor!  Ugh!  The floor was put down some 40+ years ago and was reclaimed lumber (even then).  Well, three kids, 40 years and a few disruptive hurricanes made a mess of it.  The hardwood floor resembled a washboard and had a definite slope from where one hurricane really did a job on it.  Since I am not able physically to do much about the condition of the floor, I decided to disguise it!  I am a Master of Disguise when it comes to carpentry!  So, I pondered and came up with the idea of painting black squares alternating with the plain wood.  It was not as easy to do as it seemed in my brain.  Painting straight squares on a crooked floor was more difficult than I imagined.  Son stepped in and did about a third of the "tiles". Whew!  The painting turned into an all day chore.

At one point after working for 5 hours straight, we decided it was break time.  Getting some lemonade, he and I sat on the floor talking while our paintbrushes laid side by side.  Suddenly, he laughed and said "Even the paintbrushes are tired and needed a break."  That did it.  Our 5 minute break turned into a two hour break.  There was no need to push those paintbrushes into sheer exhaustion!  We did finish up the painting later only leaving the top clear coats pending.  I will start on that at daybreak.  Once the floor is complete, the furniture will be returned then the kitchen will be complete!  This house redo is tiring!  Those paintbrushes sure better rest up before I start on the hallway!
