I have set several goals for Spring this year..one being a full herb garden! Son and I started this a few days ago with the filling in of the Puddlepond. This little pond had met its demise by the ill placement of a pitchfork. Last summer, a cottonmouth moccasin took up residence under the water lilies and with one true aim and swift thrust, Son slew the monster! He also punctured the plastic liner in the bottom of the Puddlepond. Since that fateful day, Puddlepond has never been the same! No matter how we tried to patch the holes (there were five prongs on the pitchfork!), the liner was never watertight again.
Now Puddlepond had been re-purposed as an herb garden! The gravel in the bottom was removed and more holes joined the five originals. A thick layer of leaves filled the deepest part of the pond and was covered with three wheelbarrows full of soil and six sacks of cow manure! My little Puddlepond was no more but in its place, a new herb garden rose to prominence! We admired the work we had done! This area looked great and was so ready to be planted! I rushed inside to gather some sprouting ginger roots. Mark had bought a goodly number of the roots and before I could use them all, a few set forth healthy looking sprouts. As much ginger root as I use, the sign that these might actually grow, tickled me pink! These would be the first of the plantings! I planted my ginger sprouts and then the rains came...days of rain! I have no idea if the sprouts have started to grow or even if the roots are still there. I have no idea if we pierced the liner enough to keep the rains from filling the Puddlepond-turned-herb-garden to the brim and overflowing. The massive amount of water could have washed the roots down the hill into the Bayou. I am just thankful that I had not been overzealous and planted the tiny chive and basil seeds! They surely would have been spirited away on a tide of whooshing rain water!

A beautiful garden created by my son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Joanna! I dream of the whole yard looking like this! Hurry, Spring!
I cannot get outside to check the condition of the new garden. The rains have trapped me indoors! For now, I have to settle for dreams of gardens..dreams of beautiful flowers, fresh vegetables and tender herbs! And dream...I do!
