Useless Junk or Productive Garden????

Just how many rainy days can a person take without going a tad stir crazy??? Not many and there have been far too many here lately for me to deny that I am going a bit wacko! I need to be out and about! Today's rains kept me off of the pier and out of the gardens except for a slight bit of trimming of the rose bushes. I was stuck inside. This meant for some desperate measures to keep me entertained..so again, I created frivolous things. Things that do not amount to a hill of beans to the rest of the world but took on an undeniable importance on an otherwise dreary day.

"I want to make a window garden!" I told Son at breakfast. He looked a bit bewildered but never questioned my idea one iota. He knew that once an idea manifests itself in my brain, there was little he could do to dissuade me from at least attempting to bring it to fruition. After our second cup of coffee, I was ready to garden! I must admit that this was also to make use of some remotely strange items that I "inherited". The uselessness of these items been bothering my conscience as of late. I needed to find some way to make use of things that were piling up in the cabinets and on shelves! Hopefully if this test run works and my seeds sprout, I can fill the windows with an indoor herb garden!

My brother had donated eight racks that he salvaged from a junk pile. (See..it does run in the family! I am not the only one that will pull something that has possibly some use!) These racks were from a grocery store and had been used to display some product or another but now were destined for use in my window garden! Also to be used..some clear plastic containers that are useless as food storage and some small "fishbowls" that were leftover from Darling Daughter's wedding. (Just what else do you do with twenty some-odd fishbowls?) The racks were the wire type and were supposed to mount on a free-standing base. I did not acquire the base so cup hooks were screwed into the wall above the window. The top of the rack was slipped over the hooks....and there you have it..a perfect start to the window garden!!! Since the fishbowls were glass and had no drainage holes, I decided these would be used as "rooters". In some, I placed sweet potatoes so they would vine out and provide the "settings" for the garden. In others, a few rose cuttings from the trimmings earlier. To hold these in place, I filled the bowls half full of glass "pebbles" or cabochons. (These were also leftover wedding decorations!) The cuttings and potatoes were propped between the cabochons and the remaining space was filled with water. The perfect rooting system plus the colored glass pieces made the whole thing attractive!

The plastic containers need holes drilled in the bottom before I can plant my seeds in them. These will be planted with herbs such as parsley, oregano and sage. Such herbs do not take up a huge amount of space..usually! I am in hopes that the plants will do well in such a small area as this would keep me in fresh herbs all year. Tender plants could thrive in the warmth of a sunny window and my plastic containers could be re-purposed into a useful, productive garden! This whole window garden is in the entryway so it should become quite the conversation piece if it does well!

    1. I think it turned out rather well. I am hoping that all the cuttings root and that the herbs do well here.
