Aha! Here is another enigma of the Bayou! This is something that, for the moment, defies explanation. It never occurred to me (until today) to ponder something that I have noticed for a few weeks. Then my question was..."How did that thing get up there in the first place?" This afternoon after a bout of wild weather, I could hardly wait to get outside. While I love my house, this being confined due to weather is far from my liking. I wanted to be outside in spite of the lingering drizzle. Earlier, torrential rains and high winds forced me to stay put.
As I was wandering about the hillside, I came across something a tad puzzling. About six feet off the ground, there was a fishing cork hanging in a sumac tree. I had recently asked my brothers if either of them had hung it there and received negative answers. As far as I know, the cork was not hung there by human hands. So..."How did that thing get up there in the first place?" I pondered the fact and came up with several ideas. One..the wind picked up the cork and tossed it into the tree. Two..a squirrel found the cork and became entangled in the attached line. It climbed the tree and eventually became free of the line. Three..A bird saw a fish that was hooked on the line. The bird caught the fish and flew to the tree to devour its supper. Now, all of these seem to be possible but are any of them plausible and is even one of them probable? I have no clue. Still the enigma of the fishing cork waving in the breeze lingers on in my brain. Somehow that goofy thing decided to take wing and fly to the treetop and there hang on for dear life. To say that I am intrigued is a bit of an understatement.
For a split second, I thought I should take the cork from the tree. It is not that attractive of an adornment. Then I had second thoughts. If the treed fishing bobber intrigued me to the extent that I would stand pondering its existence, perhaps it should stay put. There it can add to the mystique of the Bayou. Others can question how it came to be and ponder another of life's great questions! Yep..I agree..it does sound like I have too much time on my hands! But you tell me..."How did that thing get up there in the first place?"
