I have not seen Mama Bunny for some time now. Usually, she is out back near the canebrake every morning and every evening. Three other rabbits are out and about the area but I sure missed Mama. Early in the morn, I would check for her. Come evening, I would slip out the back door to see if she was munching the new grass shoots. I sure missed Mama. I was so afraid that a coyote, fox or hawk made dinner of my sweet little friend.
Late this afternoon, I headed out to the compost pile to empty the remnants of coffee grounds. To my surprise (and elation), there was Mama Bunny! She looked at me as I was traipsing nearer and nearer to her. Not once did she even seem a bit hesitant about staying. Yep, this was Mama! She has never been frightened of me in the least. I can walk within three feet of her and she never budges! If, per chance, I stand or sit still, she will venture towards me as if to say "Hello!". I love Mama Bunny!
Now that she is back in her usual feeding grounds, I can happily watch her. She does appear to be nursing little ones so I take it that she has babies somewhere in the area! That said, I told Michael that we will have to walk the area before cutting the grass. Mama rabbits will nest in tall tufts of grass or under brush piles. Many little ones are brutally killed by mowers that do not thoroughly check the area before cutting. What seems to be tall grass that has been bent over by the wind might very well be a cottontail nest! Since Mama Bunny trusts me like she does, I must do everything in my power to protect her and her little ones! I love my rabbits!
