Now she has done it!

All afternoon I could hear a dog bark/howling down in the marsh. From inside the house, I was not sure whether the animal was moving or stranded.  I worried that the dog might have a leash attached to its collar and be tangled among the clumps of grass.  This has happened before and I had to traipse out in the snake infested marsh to untangle the poor mutt.  At least this time, I knew it was a while before the tide would rise making it a dire situation.  I finished my painting before heading down to the pier.  There I would be able to tell if the dog was chasing rabbits or ensnared among the reeds.

Ms. Ez, the Bayou Dog,  and I quietly made our way to the end of the pier.  We listened but could not hear the pup.  I wondered if it had found its way back home (wherever that might be).  Just as we neared the water's edge, a rabbit slipped under the pier.  The poor thing looked quite bedraggled. Ahh.  So that was what caused all this fuss.  Some dog was chasing that poor bunny throughout the marshes.  From the looks of it, the bunny knew its stuff and was wet but none the worse for wear.  The dog, however, was not to be heard.

Ms. Ez and I decided to sit and wait for a spell.  She nuzzled close and reveled in the petting.  Suddenly her ears perked up and she whined a bit.  Hmmm,  something was coming. Sure enough, a small dog wandered through the marsh and out on the mudflats.  "You rascal! What are you doing out here?" I asked as if the mutt could answer.  She stopped in her tracks and stared at me in disbelief. I can only imagine what she must have been thinking by my presence.  "Uh, oh.  I am in trouble now! I have been caught wallowing around in the mud!"  This was my brother's dog and she probably thought I was going to "tell" on her!  Poor pup!  She slunk back into the marsh and stared at me through the reeds.  Try as I may, she was not going to respond to my calls.  After a bit, Ms. Ez and I decided it was the thing to do to let her head back home.  She had forgotten all about that rabbit and only wanted to hurry back to the comfort of my brother's house.

Well, I feel better now that I know this was not a situation where I was to gallivant out into the marsh.  Had it been a stranded pup, things would have been a lot different.  Thank goodness that this one just wanted a good run after that bunny.  Ms. Ez, thank you for not getting out into the marsh! That mud stinks!
