Battle of the Imagination
Life here on the Bayou is always interesting. Although I spend most of my days without ever leaving the place, I am never bored. I can always find something to do or observe something fascinating. Of course, Son claims that I am easy to amuse so that might be part of it. The fact is, I do not need "modern-day technology" to rot my brain. There are plenty of things out there to stimulate instead of sedate. I would rather use what is left of my old brain!
I was on the pier and noticed that the morning had a strange look about it. Instead of the usual golden haze that comes with the breaking dawn, things were shrouded in a more watered down coffee tint. A slight mist had settled in and gave the whole area a bit of mystique! Ahh, yes, the imagination could definitely work with this! I began to conjure all sorts of weird and wonderful tales in my head. Some would eventually make it into written words while other tales would eventually become themes for the annual Clue Hunt on the Bayou.
Then, just as I photographed a brown pelican skimming across the water, I noticed a rather unusual looking tree. Directly behind the pelican, an old oak tree splayed its limbs outward as if grasping at some lost hope. The tree, devoid of most of its leaves due most likely to some disease, stood defiantly against the coffee-colored mist. It was as if the mist came to claim what life remained in the tree. Perhaps the mist was a type of Grim Reaper that came to gather the essence of dying trees. Perhaps the Old Oak, weak and injured, was not ready to leave this earth. A battle was sure to ensue. Would the tree win the right to stay firmly planted on the shores of the Bayou or would the Reaper gather another life? I pondered.
The bleak, yet strangely calming, mist left one in a dreamlike state. The mind could travel wherever it desired. Or, at least, until the pelican made another splashdown in search of breakfast. Yep, I do find ways of entertaining the brain!
