For years now, the Frog Pond has been home to a myriad of critters. There are mostly frogs but toads, snakes, waterbugs and all sorts of other critters dwell there. I linger at the small pond on my daily hikes about the place and get to know the critters quite well. To be honest, it is not uncommon for me to even "pet" the frogs from time to time. They do a fine job of tolerating my presence there. Each day brings a new surprise whether it be more frog eggs or tadpoles morphing into frogs. My little Frog Pond has been declared a difficult project to tend, however, so it may be demolished in the near future. This makes me sad as I love to hear the frogs and toads at night. Their froggy symphony calms the nerves and lulls me into peaceful sleep.
Lately, however, I have been hearing a "new" frog in the bunch. Amidst the bullfrogs croaks, the toads trills and the green tree frogs chirps, there has been a sort of squeak. It had me confused for a bit until I found a tiny frog hiding on the bottom of the porch table. (Actually, there were two frogs but one was different!) I photographed the little guy and did a bit of research. It seems that this is a "chorus frog". I knew we had some in the area but what thrills me is that this is a Cajun Chorus Frog! Why am I so excited over this? My exuberance is merely due to the fact that this is the first time I have seen one.
Cajun Chorus Frogs live down here in the Deep South (hence the name). The frogs are definitely not new but their name is. Taxonomy has decided that the south needed a new frog so separated this little one from the Upland Chorus Frogs and gave it is current name. Personally, I will take any of the little critters whether they have new names or not. Welcome to the Bayou, little Cajun Chorus Froggy!
