Friends! We all need them.

The morning started with me standing on a chair varnishing the refurbished shelving on either side of the fireplace.  As with all old things, the shelves needed some repairs so Son got busy ripping out and replacing the bad wood.  Now it is my turn.  There will be a couple of days of varnishing, a couple of days of "cure" time, then, everything has to be returned to its proper place.  While this all needs to be done, I am miserable spending so much time indoors...especially when it is a pretty day.  Today was gorgeous and all I could do was peep out the window occasionally.  Well, until this afternoon...then...outside!

While I was gathering firewood to ward off the chill suspected for tonight, I noticed a flash of white near the pier.  Ahh, my good friend was there hunting supper.  A Great White Egret was foraging for bull minnows in the shallows.  This bird has been coming for the past few years and I dare say we are actually friends.  Maybe this goes back to being isolated from humans and having to find friends elsewhere but this bird, among others, has become quite tame.  My wood gathering came to a halt as I hurried down the board path to the pier.  A visit was necessary!

It is sort of funny, in a way, how the mind works.  When mostly isolated from human contact (I have seen about 7 people over the past year), the brain begins to seek out friendship wherever it can find it.  The great need for companionship can often skip around until you land smack dab into a friendship with whatever is there.  In my "vast" community of friends, I have the cat, many birds, a nutria, a few squirrels and a couple of snakes (yeah, snakes) and a few other critters.  I have become fully appreciative of their presence.  Friends of all sorts can be found if you truly look for them!
