Early this morning before the sun even rose above the pines, I quietly padded down to the pier. It was COLD! At least, it was cold for this old Southern girl. The thermometer said it was a few degrees above freezing but you could have fooled me. I was literally shaking. Since it was still quite dark, I was being careful where I stepped. There were no snakes to worry about but just a pine cone or stray stick could muddle up an old lady's steps. I was the only one up in the area so falling and perhaps hurting myself would not be advisable. So...I watched the ground.
While I was on the board path, things were great but, as I neared the pier, a huge difference was noticed. The path now turned to sandy splotches between pine straw, oak leaves and a bit of mulch. This messed with the brain a bit so I had to stop and regroup. The sky was brilliant red and that reflected back onto the sandy spots. As the redness filtered through the tree tops which were astir with a brisk north wind, the ground patches took on a hallucinogenic effect. My brain was becoming befuddled! The whole path became a mess of discombobulated pulsating rosy-pink blobs! Ugh! It was almost nauseating but, at the same time, captivating. For a full ten minutes I stood motionless. My brain was a mess!
As you can probably tell, my mind never experienced the effects of any mind altering drugs. I never needed any...never wanted any...never used any. Perhaps this morning's hike was enough to confirm that I made the right choice to stay away from anything that rippled the brainwaves. I simply could not have handled it! This was trippy enough!
