So far this year, we have been fortunate to avoid any tropical systems that are the norm around here. It has been a few years since anything traumatic has hit the Bayou which is fine by me. I am elated. Storms are dangerous and are a lot of hard work. I suppose that I am getting a bit lackadaisical about storm preparations because with the recent cool front passing through, I did nothing...zilch...nary a thing. But in all fairness, storms from the north usually do not bring a lot of damage to the place as the thick line of woods on our property north of the house gives us a bit of protection. That said, I did not feel guilty about just letting the storm roll in with us in a state of unpreparedness. Also, in all fairness...the problem was not by our lapse in judgement...it came from the property next to ours.
Mark and I have a thing about sharing seafood, fruit and vegetables with a lot of elderly (90+) folks who otherwise have to depend on whatever they can afford at the store. With prices nowadays, their fixed income does not go far. If we can help, we are only happy to do as much. So, I packed the back of Mark's truck full of "goody" bags for him to deliver to our friends. While doing this, that north wind blew like nobody's business! After getting everything situated for the "route", we headed to the kitchen as I insisted he call and let them know that he would be dropping by for a few minutes. I am "old-school" about certain things. No sooner had we gotten there than I saw a blur going past the window near his truck! Then...whump! Whoa! A tree fell! Or so I thought! We rushed out to find that a 30 ft long, 12 inch in diameter LIMB had fallen from our neighboring property! While it narrowly missed the truck (by about a foot), it did fall across the power line and the cable line. Both were across the truck!
Well, there was nothing to do but get in touch with the power company and wait AND phone those ladies and tell them that it would be a while before Mark made his deliveries! Call it what you may...divine intervention, karma, fortuity...I am thankful that Mark hesitated and made those first calls. That huge limb could have fallen right on him!
An hour later, found the nicest young man from the power company cutting that huge limb then restoring the power line to its rightful place. Son came home and redid the cable line and finished moving the limb from the driveway so all is well...and those bags of goodies did, indeed, get delivered to some very appreciative ladies. Blessings all around on this day.
