Not long ago, I was lamenting the fact that we had a mild winter. Not particularly that it was mild but that it was too mild! We had not even had a freeze! Now...here when it should be getting on to spring...we have winter! Old Man Winter is visiting the Bayou with a vengeance! I think he must have gotten a bit irked with my smart mouth for the freeze is on and my plants are going to pay dearly! The fruit trees and all of their blossoms will be dealt a mighty blow tonight. Last night was bad enough with the thick frost laid by dear old Jack Frost but tonight is predicted to be far worse. We shall see. To be honest, not far north of here, friends are telling me that it is snowing. SNOWING? This cannot be! But then, while I was hauling in the potted plants and covering the hotbed, I did notice some heavy clouds barreling in from the north. Hmmmm...snow? Hopefully not! I do not need such nonsense this late in the season! I love cold weather and winter is my favorite time of the year but this is a tad ridiculous! My garden cannot tolerate winter when it should be spring!
This morning's trek to the pier was a lonely one as Ms. Ez decided that it was far too cold for her liking. She stuck her nose out and turned right around, curled up on her bed and bid me farewell! Hmmmph! Fine hiking partner you are, Dog! It is just as well she did not venture out since my moccasins literally froze to the pier boards! The frost was thick enough that when I stood still for just a few minutes, my shoes became stuck! I noticed this as I photographed the heron wading near the shore. When I tried to continue my walk, there was a crunch as I lifted my feet!! Wow! I had no idea that it was that cold! Ms. Ez would have been miserable!
My hike continued for about another twenty minutes and then I returned to the house. A tad chilled, I built a roaring fire in the woodburning stove and made a pot of coffee! Ms. Ez decided that this was more her style of living and came to join me by the fireside. I am quite sure she will not be interested in the hike tomorrow either! And...perhaps I should be a bit more careful about those moccasins and freezing boards. I might just get stuck there for a while!
