It is working!

Sometimes things just need to go unexplained.  Take, for instance, the clock that has sat on the shelf for years and years and not done a single thing.  It just sat there gathering dust.  This particular clock is an antique mantle clock that belonged to my grandparents, was handed down to my mom and then finally to my brother.  It has been on my shelf for the past twenty years or so.  Even though this is technically my brother's clock, he said to leave it sit right where it is.  So it sits...gathering dust.  The thing has not worked since it came to the Little Bayou House.  It is one of those nice clocks that needs winding to make it work.  It has a key that winds both the hand springs and the chime springs.  These have been wound to no avail.  No ticking, no chiming ever took place.  The clock sat. Nothing we did ever made a difference.

Then one day last month, it decided to start ticking!  On a whim, I moved the clock a bit and I heard the pendulum start to swing as it always had in the past. Usually, this would happen and then the pendulum would inexplicably stop after about three minutes. This time, it did NOT stop!  It kept swinging!  The clock ticked away the hours.  It chimed perfectly on the half hour and on the hour!  It was working!  After twenty years on the shelf with nary a tick-tock, the clock was now happily doing its thing!

Was there some magic thing that I unknowingly did to make it start working once again or did it finally get enough rest from all those years of non-work.  Who knows?  I am just glad that it has been ticking away for these past thirty days.  It is nice to hear the chimes on those sleepless nights.  Tick-tock, tick-tock!  The clock is not just sitting collecting dust!
