Once again, Christmastime is upon us and I am just not feeling it. This has been a particularly hard couple of weeks for me so the exhaustion is fraying the nerves. I want rest not the hustle and bustle of holidays. Then again, this hustle and bustle will not last and I shall then wish it was here again. The brain is never satisfied! It is to be an unusually quiet holiday season around the Bayou, this year as, once again, Mark has to be away and the grandlittles cannot come from the island. Son and I will putter about the place and hope that Darling Daughter can take off of work at the senior care center long enough to share at least Christmas Day with us. The effort of decorating seems almost pointless but I am going through the motions. Hopefully, my mood will brighten once I start poking bits of "Christmas" in every nook and cranny of the Little Bayou House.
This morning, I spent my time putting ornaments on the tree. The tree stands in the middle of the room so can be viewed from all sides. This gives me the opportunity to sit and admire the beauty from different angles but, also, makes each misplaced light stand out like a sore thumb. I have been rearranging lights and ornaments all day. In fact, I think I have spent more time "fixing" the tree than actually decorating it.
For the past ten years or so, the "theme" has been a country Christmas but, since "farmhouse" everything has caught on with a rage, I had to be a bit different. The tree is now decorated with ornaments from "Christmases Past" which suits me fine. I am old. Why not have old decorations? In fact, it sort of suits the living room since the entire thing is filled with "old". Old furniture, old clocks, old lamps, old me...we all fit.
By the time I complete the Little Bayou House's transformation to Christmas, my spirits will have lifted and things will be easier. The peace of the season will settle around the Bayou and make the old brain thankful for what is here even though I shall miss what is not.

Christmas Past...
I was visited by the "Ghost of Christmas Past" today. No, this was not some spirited being but rather a flood of memories of long gone Christmas seasons. Since it was a rainy day here on the Bayou, Son and I thought that it might be the perfect time to do a little of that decorating for the holidays. We pulled out many, many boxes of decorations. I have accumulated far too many decorations over the past years thus making it difficult to settle on any one "style" of adorning the Little Bayou House. Perhaps it was time to start discarding some of these ornaments and other decorations. As I opened box after box, I realized this was easier said than done. Each item that was pulled from a box had some sentimental string attached to it. There were the gourd ornaments that Mark and Joanna brought back from Arizona. There were the handmade ornaments from Elizabeth and Robbie several years ago. There was the "stained glass" ornaments that were made by Michael when he was in the third grade of elementary school. Ornaments from Mom and Pop's house, decorations from aunts and uncles, decorations from grandparents and great-grandparents all packed in boxes..all waiting to be unpacked. I have things from so many folks and so many places.
Some of my favorite things were placed in a small display cabinet. These are all antique treasures from Christmas Past. Most are light bulbs from early electric Christmas lights. I have no clue whether these things will even light up but they are just too pretty to toss. It was hard to choose from the hundred or so light bulbs and vintage ornaments in the box. I only had so many spaces in the small cabinet and so many treasures that I wished to display. These were from a time when pride was put into the creation of even things like light bulbs. The detail in some shaped like birds is unbelievable! Also in this little cabinet are eleven small porcelain bells of my mother's. I always remember her carefully taking them from their box and stringing them on a long ribbon. This was then strung in a doorway between the old farmhouse kitchen and the huge living room. Why there are eleven escapes me. I assume at one time there were a dozen and when my siblings and I were tykes, one was broken. Probably at the hands of one of us kids. The largest mercury glass ornament in the cabinet always fascinated me with its swirls of colors. Several other antique ornaments fill the rest of the cabinet. These are treasures. If this was all of such treasures that filled the boxes, I would have room to spare but alas, it is not. There are so many that I sadly would never be able to display them all. Many stay stowed away in boxes.
My adventure in walking down memory lane made me think of little book that I found last Christmas. That, too, was on a rainy time here on the Bayou. Wishing to settle in with a good book, I went to the book shelves to select a suitable volume to read when I discovered a small version of the "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens. It had somehow been removed from its place with the other books on the shelf was sitting on the shelf near the Christmas Tree. For the life of me, I could not remember ever seeing the book before. How it wound up placed on the shelf near the tree was beyond me but it was the perfect bit of reading on a cold, windy and rainy Christmas Night. Another "Ghost of Christmas Past"...another keepsake that is to be found among the weird and wonderful treasures of the Little Bayou House.

Reminiscing..
"Have an old-time Christmas for old-time's sake!" The Christmas tune was playing and I was reminiscing! Old-time Christmas! Seems that the older I get the more I long for things to be the way they used to be. I miss the kids hanging their stockings on Christmas Eve..I miss the family gathering around the tree awaiting the handing out of gifts..I miss the carols being sung in the car as we went shopping..I miss old-time Christmas! The family traditions are all being put on hold for a bit as my family is scattered far and wide. It is to be expected and is not a bad thing, but I do miss these things. For some reason, it is not a lot of fun to do these things by yourself! There were certain things that each child and I would do together that seemed to be "our" special tradition. For instance, ever since I can recall, my oldest son and I always watched the movie "White Christmas" on Christmas Eve. We would wait until all the hustle and bustle was quited down, the make some hot cocoa and settle in to watch the movie. I still try to watch it every year, but it is not the same as when he is here. Then there is the one particular little, odd thing that my daughter and I used to do almost every year. After decorating the tree, we would turn out all the lights in the house except the tree lights and then would lie under the tree. We would stare up through the branches, looking at all the ornaments and live in a fantasy world for a few minutes. Dumb? Maybe.. but to us, it was a special moment. That made it precious! Today, anyone seeing me under the tree might think I fell off the ladder or lost my marbles or maybe both! My youngest son and I always made special ornaments. These could be anything from raffia angels to beaded satin ornaments. With the overload of ornaments in the closet, it seems a mite redundant to make more. I am sure if I suggested it, he would reluctantly abide but somehow I am
not sure he would really enjoy it now that he is an adult. These things are all things of the past..things I miss..things that I think about as I slowly get my house decorated. You know..come to think of it..I might ask if my son would like to make a few ornaments for old time's sake. And I might just call my daughter and ask if she would like get down on the floor and stare up through the branches and dream just for old time's sake! She in her apartment and me at home..should be interesting sharing a moment via the phone! And.. maybe.. just maybe.. even if we are not together on Christmas Eve, my oldest and I can watch "White Christmas" at the same time.. you know.. just for old time's sake....
